Eylash Extension and Growth Serum Products

Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan have them, and J. Lo's are made of mink. Madonna's cost $10,000 and are studded with diamonds.

Hollywood is hip to the latest trend. But if you blinked you may have missed it: People are getting eyelash extensions.

"With lash extensions, what they are doing is taking a lash and actually bonding it onto your own lash," said Sally Blenkey-Tchassova, a New York beauty salon owner. "It really looks better than mascara. You don't have the clumpy dirty look. It looks really fresh."

Eyelash extensions started in Asia and made their way west. Unlike traditional false eyelashes that only last one day and are applied on a strip, synthetic eyelash extensions are glued to eyelash hairs one by one with tweezers. The process takes two hours and they last about two months. It typically costs between $300 and $500.

"We are surrounded by celebrity culture and so many celebrity-centric magazines, and everyone wants to look like they are walking down a red carpet," Blenkey-Tchassova said. "This is a way for the average person to look really glamorous really fast."

Beauty salons everywhere are catching on. At the Louis Licari Salon in New York City, eyelash extensions are so popular that appointments must be booked up to months in advance.

For those who do not want to pay the high price or wait for an appointment, a good alternative is semi-permanent lashes. They cost about $50, last about 10 days and take just minutes to apply.

"People are really keen on the semi-permanent eyelashes," Blenkey-Tchassova said. They could come in handy "if you're going away for the weekend or if you have a hot date [with] someone who you haven't had a sleepover with before, and they have to see you in the middle of the night, and you don't want to frighten them. So, I mean, you're going to look great."

BOSTON, Dec 26 (Reuters) - Allergan Inc, the maker of Botox, said on Friday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved its eyelash-thickening drug Latisse.

Latisse is designed to treat a condition known as hypotrichosis of the eyelashes, which means a person does not have enough eyelashes.

The active ingredient (eyelash growth serum) in Latisse is bimatroprost, the same ingredient that is in Allergan's glaucoma treatment Lumigan. Patients taking Lumigan found a side effect of the drug to be eyelash growth, prompting Allergan to study it for the new use.

Latisse is a once-daily prescription treatment that is applied to the base of the upper eyelash with a sterile, single-use-per-eye disposable applicator. Once treatment is stopped, eyelashes will gradually return to where they were prior to treatment.

Allergan said it estimates global peak sales of Latisse solution could top $500 million a year.

Gary Nachman, an analyst at Leerink Swann, said that while approval was expected, "in this cautious environment, every approval through the FDA should be viewed positively."

Latisse is the first prescription product for lengthening eyelashes, making sales forecasting a little difficult.

Larry Biegelsen, an analyst at Wachovia, said he agrees with the company's forecast of more than $500 million. However, "we think the initial uptake will be muted due to the economic situation."

Biegelsen forecasts sales of $30 million in 2009, growing to $310 million in 2012.

Leerink Swann's Nachman said he expects the drug to generate sales of $20 million in 2009, growing to $80 million in 2012.

"We believe the opportunity for Latisse could be much larger, but we still need to do more work on this largely unpioneered market," he said.

Latisse is a structural prostaglandin analog, a lipid compound derived from fatty acids designed to bind to prostaglandin receptors. These receptors are present in hair and are thought to be involved in the development and regrowth of the hair follicle.

Side effects of Latisse can include eye redness, itchy eyes and a darkening of the eyelid skin. Though not reported in clinical studies, Allergan said Latisse may also cause the colored part of the eye to become browner, a condition that might be permanent.

Allergan said it expects to launch the product in the first quarter of 2009.

Allergan's shares rose 1.1 percent to $36.85 on the New York Stock Exchange. (Reporting by Toni Clarke; Editing by Derek Caney and Gunna Dickson)

Kelly: All I can say is WOW! It is the miracle for eyelash and eyebrow help. Having been lucky enough to manage to get some of this before supplies ran out made me wish I would have listened to all the people praising it and bought more. I was a bit worried about it not working and the price... I used to wear eyelash extensions because of the spotty eyelashes I had. My eyelashes were always spotty, thin, and short. In fact you could say it looked like I did not have any at all. This product started to work almost as soon as I started to use it. It started with my eyelashes getting darker. For me this took about 1 week. Then after the second week my eyelashes started to get longer and fuller. I started to notice growing hairs in all the gaps in my eyelashes. I could hardly believe it. I usually do not believe the hype surrounding miracle products but this does what is says. I would HIGHLY recommend this product to ANYONE that is not happy with their eyelashes. I did not try it on my eyebrows but if it works this well for eyelashes I don't see why it would not work for eyebrows also. JanMarini.com

Just like Jan Marini was pulled off of the market due to possible drug side effect, Revitalash has the same ingredient as Jan Marini. For patients using the prescription drug, using the Revitalash in addition to the drug may increase the risk of optic nerve damage because the extra dose of bimatoprost may decrease the prescription drug's effectiveness. Damage to the optic nerve may lead to decreased vision and possibly blindness. Recently, Revitalash has changed its formula, but the ingredients are not written anywhere on their website.

Eyelash Cosmetic News and Reviews

New Products Help Eyelash Growth
06/06/07
ABC 7 - KGO-TV/DT
May 14, 2007

Remarkable advances have been made to improve our looks -- including lasers for skin resurfacing and Botox to prevent wrinkles. Now there may be something to enhance eye lashes. New eyelash products may actually help grow lashes, and it all started as side-effects from common prescription drugs.

Eyelashes have become one of the hottest trends in cosmetics, the longer and thicker-the better.
Carrie Maher, Eyelash Extensions Client: "Today I'm getting eyelash extensions because I like the way they look."

Eyelash extensions involve individual lashes glued one-by-one above the base of each lash. The cost: $300 dollars for the first session and fifty dollars every two weeks for a touch-up. Although the price is steep, business is booming.

Helen Woo, Aesthetician: "They look very, very natural, but besides that the eyes look bigger and the lashes look lots longer and it looks really beautiful."

But instead of gluing on lashes - fascinating new research suggests we may be able to "grow" our own long lashes. Surprisingly, it all started with these three glaucoma drugs - called prostaglandin analogs. These new treatments for glaucoma have an added benefit.

Andrew Iwach, M.D., Ophthalmologist: "All three of these can make eyelashes grow in certain patients."

Some doctors are even telling patients to put a drop of one of these glaucoma drugs on a cue tip and apply it to the base of their lashes to stimulate lash growth.

But San Francisco glaucoma specialist Dr. Andrew Iwach says these are drugs meant to be put into the eye and warns they have one very serious side-effect.

Andrew Iwach, M.D: "In some patients there can be a change in the color of the iris."

That's right, the iris color can actually darken or even change - especially in hazel eyes and the change is permanent.

It didn't take long for marketers to come up with seemingly less risky eyelash products that are applied topically - like eyeliner. So far there are two different brands - one even lists an ingredient very close to a prostaglandin analog compound. The other boldly claims to grow lashes. they're expensive at about $160 a tube, but they still cost less than $300 dollar eyelash extensions..."if" they work.

Pam Farrell, a Corte Madera skin care specialist, was skeptical so she used herself as a guinea pig.

Pam Farrell, Aesthetician: After about five weeks, I was really quite surprised, I noticed that when I used an eyelash curler that my lashes were extending beyond the silver bar in the eyelash curler. My lashes grew, I think about a quarter of an inch beyond the eyelash curler."

One of her clients, Joanne Cooper, tried it on her short, thin lashes applying it along the base of her lashes each night.

Joanne Cooper, Eyelash Eyelash Enhancer User: "In about a month, my eyelashes were getting so long that they were hitting my glasses when I was wearing my glasses, so it works.

Kim Nguyen tried it on her very thin lashes.

Kim Nguyen, Eyelash Enhancer User: "After a good 6 weeks my lashes all really full and nice looking, you know - with a little mascara on - it's perfect."

Heather Cooper tried the lash grower after she spontaneously lost half her lashes.

Heather Cooper Eyelash Enhancer User: I woke up and I had missing eyelashes exactly on the same a whole patch on both eyes.

Almost immediately after using the lash product, she says her lashes grew back longer than before. Amazing claims that may be true, but so far there is no real research to show safety or efficacy of either of these products so check with your eye doctor first.

Revitalash vs. MD Lash Factor vs. Jan Marini

The latest trend in the skin care industry is the formulation of proprietary blends of "eyelash and brow growth stimulators". What a fantastic concept! Many people (men and women alike) suffer from skin conditions, nervous conditions, medical conditions as well as intrinsic aging factors that cause eyelashes to be sparse, break easily, or virtually be non-existent.

The only products worth mentioning that, in fact, truly measure up to their claims are RevitaLash MD by Athena Cosmetics, MD Lash Factor and Age Intervention Eyelash by Jan Marini.

I have had the liberty of using the products for comparison purposes and testing out these products has given me insight into the pros and cons of each. I pass this information on to my clients in the clinic allowing them to make the ultimate decision. To Purchase these products, visit our clinic at www.SkinCenterMall.com
